Lady Gaga Now Subject Of College Course

Class at the University of South Carolina is called 'Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame.'By Gil Kaufman

Fame is so hard to define these days. How does a star know when she's truly made it? Is it when the hosts of "Today" dress up as you for Halloween? When you reach 1 billion views on YouTube? Are multiplatinum album sales and sold-out tours still a good barometer?
Or does one only reach true icon status when a college professor decides that person is important enough to base a university-level course around?
If so, welcome to the club, Lady Gaga!
According to the New York Times, University of South Carolina sociology professor Mathieu Deflem is planning to offer a course next semester entitled "Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame."
Deflem plans to delve into what makes a person famous and what it means to be famous in today's society. "The central objective is to unravel some of the sociologically relevant dimensions of the fame of Lady Gaga," Deflem states in the course description for the class, which he says is the first of its kind in the nation.
Deflem said that after being smitten with Gaga during a "Tonight" appearance last January, he attended a concert of hers in Atlanta and went on to catch 28 Gaga shows all over the globe. He's since become a superfan, collecting more than 300 CDs and records and launching the fan site gagafrontrow.net.
He's also met Mother Monster five times. Does that mean she'll swing by for a lecture sometime? "I will get the word out to her that I'm doing the course," he said when asked if he'd like her to drop in. "But it might be logistically too difficult for her to come because she will be on tour for most of the spring semester."
Gaga joins a venerable list of courses that will likely elicit a call from parents asking just what their money is going toward, including Georgetown University's "Philosophy and Star Trek," the University of California-Irvine's "The Science of Superheroes," Frostburg State University's "The Science of Harry Potter" and University of California-Berkeley's "Simpsons and Philosophy."
What do you think of a university teaching a course on Gaga? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!

Rebecca Gayheart Is Out With Baby Billie

I think this is the first time I've seen Billie! Adorable! Don't you want to pinch those cheeks? Rebecca Gayheart was spotted out with the baby yesterday afternoon. They went to a private residence.
Can you make out Billie's personalized booties (click through the pictures below for a better look)? Too cute :) It looks like Rebecca is focused on being a full-time mom while Eric Dane is still busy with 'Grey's Anatomy.' As you other stay-at-home moms know, getting out is so important!
I hope they had a good time :)

Justin Bieber Fans Rave Over 'Classic' 3-D Trailer

'It feels like it's more of a documentary,' one fan says after preview of 'Never Say Never' clip at concert in L.A.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias

Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never"

Photo: Paramount

Some lucky Justin Bieber fans got the first glimpse of what to expect from his 3-D movie when he premiered the trailer for "Never Say Never" during his My World Tour stop in Los Angeles on Monday night. And the verdict from the fans MTV News spoke with can be summed up in one word: amazing.

"He said, 'Hey L.A., we have a special surprise for you. Something no one else has seen yet and you're only seeing it here tonight,' " Nicole Reddin recalled after the Staples Center concert. "And everyone was super excited. It feels like it's more of a documentary. It's a little bit more real than the things you see. It's a lot more [that] you get to know him and that's what we want to see."
Priestly Cleveland gave the trailer a glowing review. "It's the trailer for his movie, which is actually coming out Valentine's Day weekend. ... I loved it," she said. "My favorite part of the trailer was definitely when he was younger and singing and playing the guitar. I loved it ... it was cute, classic."
Added Juliana En, "It shows a bunch of baby pictures of him while he's growing up and pictures of him backstage just, like, doing random stuff."
The preview had special meaning for another longtime Belieber. "I remember when I used to watch Justin Bieber on YouTube before he got famous and I was totally a fan," Rachel Kelly said. "So this is really exciting."
"Never Say Never" won't hit theaters until February, but the singer's fans plan to keep busy until the flick's release date.
"I can't wait to see it," Cleveland told us. "In the meantime, I'm just gonna keep going on YouTube."
What do you think of the "Never Say Never" trailer? Tell us in the comments!

Britney Spears' Best Pre-'Glee' Comedy Moments

Before she hits up 'Glee,' relive her small-screen history.By Jocelyn Vena

Tuesday night's (September 28) "Glee" episode is all about Britney Spears. While fans and the show's stars are excited to see the singer light up the screen in the appropriately titled "Britney/Brittany" episode, it's hardly the first time Spears has performed for a laugh on the small screen (and we're not talking about her docu-series "Britney & Kevin: Chaotic").

Spears brought the funny in a show-opening appearance on the 2009 VMAs, her top 10 list on "Late Night With David Letterman" and on "Saturday Night Live," especially during her stints as the show's host in 2000 and 2002.
In 1999, Britney Spears stopped by "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" to teach Melissa Joan Hart a lesson or two about loneliness, fame and the proper way to do choreography. The duo also hooked up for Spears' "(You Drive Me) Crazy" video from the soundtrack for Hart's movie "Drive Me Crazy," which featured "Entourage" star Adrian Grenier.
Spears was one of the many pop stars to stop by "Will & Grace" when she made an appearance on the show in 2006. She showed off her Southern accent and comedic flair as closeted lesbian Amber Louise.
The singer proved she was funny once again when she appeared on "How I Met Your Mother" in 2008. Her People's Choice-nominated cameo (she was up for Favorite Scene-Stealing Guest Star) had fans rooting for her again after a difficult period in her personal life. She hit the small screen as Abby, a receptionist with a grudge against Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) after he forgot to call her after they, uh, went out.
What was your favorite small-screen moment for Britney Spears? Let us know in the comments!

Britney Spears 'Glee' Episode Draws Record-Setting Ratings

Tribute episode brings in 13.3 million viewers.By James Dinh

Britney Spears and Heather Morris on the set of "Glee"

Photo: FOX

Madonna's "Glee" tribute episode might have been titled "The Power of Madonna," but it was the show's tribute to Britney Spears that reigned supreme. The broadcast, which featured cameos from the pop princess herself, drew 13.3 million viewers, leading the 8 p.m. hour and posting its best-ever rating among adults 18-49.

Tuesday night's episode, appropriately titled "Britney/Brittany," had a 5.8 rating and rose 4 percent from last week's season-two premiere. The feat made history for "Glee," as it becomes the first series since NBC's "Seinfeld" in 1993 to debut as the top series of the week and then spike in ratings the following week, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The episode, which highlighted Heather Morris' character Brittany S. Pearce, revolved around the McKinley High students' fight to perform Britney Spears numbers. Through anesthesia-induced sequences, the Gleeks tapped into their inner pop star to perform renditions of the singer's hits, including " ... Baby One More Time" and "Me Against the Music."
In addition to Spears' appearances on the hit Fox show, the singer took to Twitter during the West Coast premiere to thank fans for campaigning in support of the episode. "I loved it! Thank you guys SO much for making this happen!" she tweeted. The pop princess also gave props to the many song and video re-creations, including "I'm a Slave 4 U," saying, "Slave: Oh ... My ... God ...! Those little boys are SO cute! I know how hard it is to dance with that snake! Nice job."
Spears' manager, Adam Leber, also showed his appreciation for the episode, which spawned multiple trending topics on Twitter. "So glad you guys loved the GLEE episode! The Overwhelming worldwide response has been insane.3 of the top 10 worldwide trending topics.Sick! Big big big thank you to Ryan Murphy, the incredible cast and Brit's fans for making it happen...."
After such success, it wouldn't be surprising if the rumors of a second Spears-devoted episode came true, since "Britney/Brittany" only included hits from the first few years of the singer's career.

Alicia Keys has proven to be as selfless in real life as she is in song.

The singer held her 8th annual Keep a Child Alive Black Ball event in New York on Thursday night. The fundraiser brought out Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Usher, Jay Sean, Janelle Monae, Jennifer Hudson, Whitney Houston and more.
Jay-Z and Keys' husband, Swizz Beatz, performed "On to the Next One," and Jay later performed "Empire State of Mind." Monae also hit the stage, as did Keys and Sade, who performed a duet, "Love Is Stronger Than Pride."
"It's my heart and soul," Keys told MTV News about the organization she co-founded. "Since the beginning, we've been very driven to do incredible work. I'm proud to show what four to five women who are very dedicated can do."
The organization benefits children and families who have been affected by AIDS but can't afford to purchase medicine; the event reportedly helped raise $2.4 million.
This year, Keep a Child Alive introduced the "Buy Life" T-shirt. The shirt features a large barcode on the garment; donors can buy the shirt and scan the code with their smart phones to make a donation to the charity. Every time the code is scanned by a phone, a donation goes through. Ryan Seacrest, Kim Kardashian and Katie Holmes are among the celebrity spokespeople appearing in ads for the shirt.
"It's like a dream to me to be among these people singing and performing, and opening people's eyes to what Keep a Child Alive can do," Keys said.

Britney Spears Tweets About 'Glee' Tribute Episode

'I loved it!' writes the pop star, who also thanked fans and shared her thoughts on the show's covers.By James Dinh

Britney Spears and Heather Morris on the set of "Glee"

Photo: FOX

Britney Spears fans are a force to be reckoned with. Earlier this year, they campaigned for an episode of "Glee" to be dedicated solely to their favorite pop princess. And after much anticipation, on Tuesday night the students of McKinley High shimmied, crooned and danced their way in tribute to the entertainer. The singer took to Twitter to thank her fans for their efforts and shared her thoughts on the program, titled "Britney/Brittany," and its covers of her songs.

"I loved it! Thank you guys SO much for making this happen!" Britney tweeted. In particular, the star seemed to enjoy the renditions of her classic tunes, saying, "I love this version of Stronger. Artie did a great job," and "The GLEE version of Toxic is amazing!"
While some of the McKinley High students — including Cheerio cheerleader Brittany S. Pearce (played by Heather Morris) — went into anesthesia--induced dream sequences to channel their inner Britney, Spears herself emerged throughout the episode's hallucinogenic fantasies. Appearing as Madonna's character at the end of "Me Against the Music," a high-school teacher in "... Baby One More Time" and a fellow cheerleader, the singer remained a source of inspiration for the Gleekers.
Spears gave kudos to co-star Morris, saying, "Awww Heather Morris is sooo cute! Brittany S Pearce. Ha! She was so fun to work with and was really sweet in person."
The singer not only applauded Morris' friendliness, but also her rendition of "I'm a Slave 4 U." She wrote of the sultry production, "Slave: Oh ... My ... God ...! Those little boys are SO cute! I know how hard it is to dance with that snake! Nice job." The pop star also was surprised at how well the show re-created the music video set of her 2003 Madonna duet, "Me Against the Music," pointing out that it "looks just like the original," and adding, "Santana does a great Madonna impression."
As the students walked Spears through memory lane, Lea Michele's cover of "... Baby One More Time" also had the singer reminiscing. "Watching Baby brings back so many memories! Feels like yesterday," she explained.
John Stamos also made a guest appearance in the episode, as the dentist who sends the Gleeks into Britney world. Spears made it clear that the 47-year-old actor looks as good as he did during his heyday. "John Stamos is still hot! He looks the same as he did on Full House," she tweeted.
As with many "Glee" fans, Britney found a pleasantly odd interest in Jane Lynch, who plays the aggressive cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, describing the actress as "hilarious and scary all rolled into one."
Spears wasn't the only one who enjoyed filming the tribute episode — the "Glee" castmembers recently dished on working with the star. Morris told Australian magazine TV Week that the singer was her childhood inspiration. "She was my idol from, like, age 12 to 16," she said. "I sang to her [songs] in my living room and danced to her — I learned all her moves. And I had my talent shows and I lip-synched to her. I just kept flashing back to growing up and being obsessed with her."
Naya Rivera, who plays Santana, also spoke highly of the pop icon. "I love Britney Spears. I mean, who doesn't? We all grew up with her," she proclaimed in a promo video for the show. "The first music purchase I ever made was '... Baby One More Time' on cassette. [It was like], 'Britney Spears is going to be in my mitts, what do I do?' [And I was like], 'Hi Britney!' And then she was like, 'Hey!' She was awesome and beautiful. She was, like, magical."

Justin Bieber's 'Never Say Never' Director Explains Movie's Plot

'It's not just the concert ... this is a musical movie,' Jon Chu says.By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber in the trailer for "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never"

Photo: Paramount

With the trailer out, fans can now begin counting down to Valentine's Day weekend 2011 when Justin Bieber's 3-D flick, "Never Say Never," hits theaters. And the movie's director, Jon Chu, explained just how he plans to integrate the concert footage, shot earlier this year at Bieber's show at Madison Square Garden, with the behind-the-scenes footage and interviews that he will also be using in the film.

"We had this sort of hyperlink idea through the film, which is what makes it really an interesting movie," Chu said. "It's not like the other concert films where you are onstage and then go backstage and then onstage and go backstage. It's not just the concert ... this is a musical movie, when words aren't enough in telling the stories of his life, [we use music]."
For example, Chu continued, "You know, if he's talking about his youth and talking about his magnetic smile, you start to hear 'U Smile' start to creep in the background and the underscore ... you see images from his life, and at the end of that song, the spotlight from the number connects with the spotlight of his tour bus and he goes back into his bed," Chu explained. "And there [are] hyperlinked ideas. It's kind of like 'Chicago,' when we're weaving in and out."
And for the haters, Chu says that this film will prove that Bieber is the real deal. "The number-one thing we wanted was the honesty in this," he explained. "People have a very preconceived notion of Justin Bieber and people can think whatever they want, but we wanted to show the honest other side of Justin."
So, who is the Bieber that Chu believes the film will show? "It's a crazy thing to see a kid from Canada, in a town like Stratford that's obsessed with Shakespeare, that this kid can know and be obsessed with R&B and be anointed by sort of the hip-hop, R&B world, that he is sort of blessed by them," he explained. "That's very, very special and interesting."

JWoww Critiques 'Jersey Shore' Halloween Costumes

She weighs in on Halloween looks for Snooki, DJ Pauly D and the Situation.By Jocelyn Vena

JWoww

Photo: Jenny McCoy/MTV News

Halloween is almost here, and as the stars of "Jersey Shore" gather for their reunion special Thursday night (October 27), fans have another chance to check out their looks for costume inspiration.

When JWoww stopped by the MTV News offices recently, we got her to rate some of the costumes of her "Shore" pals available in stores. She liked them, but had some key advice for anyone with enough courage to wear them.
Snooki
JWoww's Advice: "I love it! The only thing with you is, we need to bronze you! That's about it. ... It's pretty on-point. The poof, everything!"
The Situation
JWoww's Advice: "You're a little too tall. He doesn't have glasses either. We need to put sunglasses on you, and there you go!"
DJ Pauly D
JWoww's Advice: "I like it! [No] glasses, though! And he is very, very dark ... tan. I don't understand why they wouldn't make this tan, and Mike's. It's Pauly! I like the tattoos. Do they have the Cadillac [symbol] on the inside? No. I like it."
Vinny
JWoww's Advice: "Vinny has the look. It's not like the costume. It's the look, so he has the one eyebrow, like the Ace Ventura. It's all about that with the glasses. Depending on him right now, he's a little pale, so you don't have to worry about the tan," she laughed. "Love you, Vinny!"
JWoww
JWoww's Advice: Don't buy the costume! Why? "You know, there's just upper body and things!"
And of all the celebrities we asked about "Jersey Shore" costumes, most preferred Snooki. Audrina Patridge, Aubrey O'Day and Stephanie Pratt were all about the look. "Snooki's the easiest, so probably Snookers," Pratt laughed. "I love the poof. I love the hair teasing. I don't know why it has a bad rep. Whenever I get my hair done, I'm like, 'Tease it!' "
Share your Halloween costume ideas in the comments!

'The Dark Knight Rises': From 2008 Rumors To 2010 Reality

Follow our 'Batman 3' timeline to see how it all began.By Eric Ditzian

Christian Bale as Batman in "The Dark Knight"

Photo: Warner Bros.

Update your calendar now: The Batman movie you'll be lining up to buy tickets for in July 2012 is called "The Dark Knight Rises."
Director Christopher Nolan's announcement of the title comes after more than two years of speculation about a movie we simply dubbed "Batman 3." The first rumors about a third installment in the franchise cropped up in fall 2008, just a few months after the record-breaking opening of "The Dark Knight." Only recently, though, has solid info about the new flick begun to trickle out.
From early rumors to drool-inducing reality, here's how it all went down:
December 16, 2008: Unnamed sources suggest a sort of pre-pre-production on "Batman 3" has begun — with set builders, stuntmen and film crews currently being hired — with an eye on shooting in February 2009.
October 7, 2008: "Dark Knight" scribe David Goyer tells MTV News those rumors are "B.S.," adding, "Chris and I haven't even talked about it. He quite understandably is taking a long, long vacation and wants to purge himself."
September 30, 2008: One in a long string of casting rumors pops up, suggesting Rachel Weisz will star as Catwoman. In the next few years, other rumors will claim, among other things, that Eddie Murphy will play the Riddler, Johnny Depp will play the Riddler, Philip Seymour Hoffman will play the Penguin and Cher will play Catwoman.
January 8, 2009: "Dark Knight" producer Chuck Roven tells us that Nolan and Goyer are "talking and thinking" about the next film.
February 11, 2009: News breaks that Nolan will delay production on "Batman 3" in favor of work on "Inception."
June 22, 2009: With Nolan's status uncertain, star Christian Bale tells us, "I truly don't know that we're ever going to see another Batman movie."
July 24, 2009: Co-star Gary Oldman tells us production will begin in 2010.
February 8, 2010: Goyer is reportedly writing "Batman 3" with Chris Nolan's brother Jonah.
March 10, 2010: Nolan announces that "Batman 3" will bring the series' story to a close. "I'm very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we've done with the characters," he said. "My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these things don't go on forever in film, and viewing it as a story with an end is useful."
April 30, 2010: Reports suggest "Batman 3" will hit theaters July 20, 2012.
June 4, 2010: Nolan confirms that the third film will not feature the Joker, a role played by Heath Ledger in "Dark Knight." "I just don't feel comfortable about it," he said.
June 28, 2010: Nolan confirms the July 2012 release date, but declines to speculate on reports that production will begin in March 2011.
July 20, 2010: "Dark Knight" cinematographer Wally Pfister tells us he wants to shoot "Batman 3" entirely in the large-scale IMAX film format.
September 29, 2010: Nolan officially signs on to direct the film.
October 6, 2010: Reports suggest the movie will begin shooting in April 2011 in New Orleans.
October 13, 2010: Tom Hardy signs on for an unspecified lead role in "Batman 3," giving rise to speculation that he'll play a villain opposite Bale.
October 27, 2010: Nolan announces the new movie will be called "The Dark Knight Rises." He also says the Riddler will not factor into the story.
Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight Rises."

'Glee' Britney Spears Episode Slammed By Parents Television Council

Group describes show as 'an endorsement of narcotics abuse, public masturbation, and school-sanctioned burlesque.'By James Dinh

Last week's episode of "Glee" found Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) shouting, "It's a Britney Spears sex riot!" as she attempted to put a stop to the glee club's saucy rendition of "Toxic."
But she's not the only one who had an issue with the Spears takeover at William McKinley High School. The hit Fox show has come under fire as the Parents Television Council has deemed the "Britney/Brittany" episode the "Worst TV Show of the Week" due to the broadcast's "explicit sexual content."
A message posted on the organization's website decries the episode's "skimpy outfits" and "sultry grinds" during "I'm a Slave 4 U." And even though "Glee" castmembers show very little skin in the re-creation for the 2001 Madonna duet "Me Against the Music," the PTC said the interpretation included "plenty of girl-girl bumping and grinding."
According to the group, the tribute to the always-controversial Spears wasn't appropriate because the singer is far from a suitable role model.
"Glee earned its highest ratings ever with this Britney Spears tribute, drawing 13.3 million viewers," the message continued. "A scary thought considering that the mostly young teen/tween audience basically witnessed an endorsement of narcotics abuse, public masturbation, and school-sanctioned burlesque. But perhaps most troubling is the deification of a troubled pop star into a symbol of empowerment and self-esteem. Considering her stints in rehab, her very public breakdowns, and her questionable parenting skills, there is absolutely no way Spears should be considered a role model. The producers of the show can spare us the old song-and-dance about fallen celebs turning their lives around. What's next? Portraying Ike Turner as a reformed feminist?"
Spears knows controversy and criticism far too well. Since the beginning of her career, she's always raised eyebrows with everything from her sex-kitten public image to her sometimes-questionable parental judgment. While the pop star has played it relatively safe since her comeback, the singer did make headlines last year for her suggestive single "If U Seek Amy," the third offering from her album Circus.
Do you think the "Britney/Brittany" episode of "Glee" was inappropriate? Tell us in the comments below!

30 Seconds To Mars, Ke$ha Plan Big VMA Arrivals

Can this year's nominees rival the elephants and yachts of years past?By James Montgomery

30 Seconds to Mars

Photo: Myriam Santos/ Kayda

For much of the past decade, the MTV Video Music Awards has really been two shows: The one where they hand out the Moonmen, and the one that occurs on the red carpet, where the stars try their very best to outdo each other with over-the-top arrivals.
From yachts to 18-wheel trucks, elephants to horse-drawn carriages, how you arrive at the VMAs has become just as important as whether you take home an award. As you can probably imagine, sometimes, things get a little crazy.
"Usually, artists don't let us know [how they're arriving] until the last minute, which makes things interesting," Video Music Awards Pre-Show executive producer Ryan Kroft told MTV News. "A lot of times, they'll want to do things like land a hot-air balloon on the carpet, or drive a car down the carpet, but generally, the fire marshal frowns on those kinds of things, so we have to tell them 'no.' "
Still, there are plenty of ideas that do get the green light, and they're just as epic as the stars that thought them up. And this year's VMA arrivals are no different, though for aesthetic reasons, they're slightly scaled back.
"In New York, we had stars arriving on a fire truck, a double-decker bus, but that wouldn't play this year," Kroft said. "The carpet is designed to look like the stars are arriving at a Hollywood Hills mansion — white, chrome, glass — so having someone arrive with a marching band would seem somewhat out of place."
But there are big arrivals nonetheless: One of the biggest involves 30 Seconds to Mars, who have already started touting their entrance as being thoroughly crazy.
"30 Seconds to Mars are recreating a scene from their 'Kings and Queens' video," Kroft explained. "They'll have an army of bicyclists arriving with them, and they'll be riding bikes themselves. Most of the bicyclists are from the video."
Going equally big is Ke$ha, who has a few surprises ready for the VMA carpet. We don't want to give it all away, but here's what we can reveal: "Ke$ha has big plans for the carpet. I can't talk about all of them, but she is arriving in a Delorean, which she got herself," Kroft said. "It'll be like 'Back to the Future.' "
And, in keeping with grand tradition, there are still plenty of stars who haven't said how they're going to be arriving — Jay Sean is planning something "big and sexy," Soulja Boy Tell'em has some swaggadocious plans in the works, and Bruno Mars is still plotting, too — and then, there's Lady Gaga, who ... well, you never know what she'll do.
"We still don't know what some people are doing," Kroft laughed. "The only way you'll know is to tune in to the VMA Pre-Show and watch."
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

How 'Paranormal Activity 2' Avoided The 'Blair Witch' Curse

Horror film draws $41.5 million in weekend ticket sales by sticking to what made the original flick a hit.By Eric Ditzian

"Paranormal Activity 2"

Photo: Paramount Pictures

About a year after the genre-bending "Blair Witch Project" turned from a Sundance sleeper to a $250 million blockbuster, a sequel arrived in multiplexes. It didn't stay long, grossing just 19 percent of the original horror hit.
For years afterward, "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2" was held up as an example of what not to do with a breakout movie franchise. Paramount learned that lesson well. This weekend, "Paranormal Activity 2" — a follow-up to last year's pop-culture phenomenon — opened to $41.5 million in ticket sales. How did they do it? By not changing much at all.
"What worked for 'Paranormal Activity 2' was that its content and marketing didn't stray too far from what made the first one such a popular hit," Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru said. " 'Blair Witch 2' tried too hard to be more of a regular narrative film, and its release was like a regular horror movie saturating all screens. The 'Paranormal' follow-up still had the look and feel of the first while adding to the mayhem."
Whereas the second "Blair Witch" ditched its found-footage angle in favor of a more straightforward horror tale, "PA 2" stuck with what fans originally loved: a suburban couple filming the presence of a demon. When it came to marketing the sequel to a skeptical public numbed by shoddy follow-ups to beloved originals, Paramount employed a similar marketing strategy as it did in 2009: an online campaign for audiences to demand midnight screenings.
"Continuity is important when you're building a franchise," said Phil Contrino, editor of BoxOffice.com. "There needs to be a cohesive vision."
The result of that vision was tons of fan anticipation. "PA 2" broke the R-rated midnight record set by "Watchmen" ($4.6 million), pulling in $6.3 million during those late-night showings. By the morning, the movie was playing on 4,500 screens, and, according to Paramount, 54 percent of viewers were female. "I think this definitely turned into an unconventional date movie," Contrino said.
Yet, while the $41.5 million haul is impressive, cautionary notes abound. Brandon Gray of Box Office Mojo noted that, while "PA 2" soared out of the gate, it might not end up eclipsing the original's haul. "With its Friday gross accounting for 48 percent of its weekend gross, 'Paranormal Activity 2' had one of the most Friday-loaded opening weekends ever," he wrote. "Nearly all other horror movies with similar Friday shares failed to double their opening-weekend grosses in their final tallies, suggesting that 'Paranormal Activity 2' will have a quick flame-out and make less than its predecessor."
Regardless of its finishing gross, a third "Paranormal Activity" seems all but assured. And like the lesson provided by "Blair Witch 2," horror series that have spawned three or more installments, such as "Poltergeist" and "Hellraiser," offer cautionary tales about how quickly fans can turn away from cherished material.
"A third film will definitely do well, but after that, it's tricky," Contrino said. "They have to make sure the sequels don't unintentionally lapse into self-parody. To make it past three films, the series will also have to evolve in some way in order to stay fresh, and that's not an easy thing to do."
Check out everything we've got on "Paranormal Activity 2."

I hope they make some time to go out and celebrate this evening: Ben's new movie, 'The Town,' is projected to be the #1 movie this weekend! It was expected to come in #2 behind the teen movie 'Easy A,' but unless the teens turn out in force tonight, 'The Town' is expected to win the weekend.

Kelly Ripa's Life Gets Even Busier with a New TV Show

If there's one thing that working moms hate, it's hearing about celebrity moms who "do it all." You know those slim, toned, well-dressed stars who juggle their flashy Hollywood careers with their perfect children (in their own, pint-sized designer clothes)? "She probably has three nannies," you say. "With a personal trainer, personal chef and personal assistant, I'd be the perfect mom, too."
Now, the always-chipper Kelly Ripa is about to wedge another TV show into her busy schedule, though we're pleased by her honesty about how difficult it can be. Ripa's life is already demanding: She's a cohost on ABC's Live with Regis and Kelly, has three kids (Michael, 13, Lola, 9, and Joaquin, 7), makes TV commercials, all while managing a consistent exercise routine. And yet Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, are now also in the process of co-writing and producing Port Love -- an ABC sitcom about life behind the scenes at a TV show. Consuelos will star, and Ripa will play a recurring role. So far, there's no mention of Ripa leaving her morning TV gig.
Of course, Ripa has done double duty before, co-hosting  Live with Regis and Kelly in the morning and appearing once a week on three seasons of the ABC sitcom Hope & Faith. And she and Consuelos have been working on several TV projects together through their production company, Milogo Productions. One of them, Homemade Millionaire (TLC, Fridays, 10 p.m. ET), is a reality show for aspiring female entrepreneurs that premieres on Nov. 19.
Still, it's hard to be mad at the seemingly perfect Ripa, who, in actuality, wears quite a bit of mom guilt on her sleeve. "When I'm at work, I'm remembering what I forgot to do for the kids and when I'm with the kids, I'm remembering what I forgot to do at work," she recently told Good Housekeeping. Plus, all of her kids are now in school, so you can't complain that she's leaving them with a nanny.
And she's refreshingly candid about what she lacks: "Sleeping is not something I do a lot of," Ripa said. Now that's something we can all relate to.

Do you think Kelly Ripa is a good role model for working mothers? Chime in below!

Kanye West Rants About Undeserving Award Winners

Kanye West is at it again. But sadly it is not singing. While speaking to Access Hollywood about his new short film, Runaway, the outspoken rapper once again let his mouth run away when it came to the topic of next year’s Grammy nominations. Check out his response in the interview clip below.

West still wants to discuss last year, where he was criticized for interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video. He asked, "Why are the last four Albums of the Year: Taylor Swift, Dixie Chicks, Ray Charles and Herbie Hancock? Like, you know, with all due respect… that’s inaccurate. How about albums that sold 10 million?"
West might have his own album, My Beautiful Twisted Reality, in mind which is set to be released November 22. But really, this isn’t about him. "I don’t really care about me. It’s about everybody. It’s about artists. It’s about fair ground. If Drake is having an awesome year and his year is better than mine, I’m not gonna say I should win. I’m gonna say Drake should win."
If nothing else the rapper is sure to have a busy year. On top of his first new album in three years, the 35-minute short he directed starring Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks and named after one of his new songs will air on MTV tomorrow night at 8pm EST. Ironically the same network where he placed partial blame. "I pinpoint the Grammys and the VMAs because they have to take responsibility, because they mean something to us," he said. "Little kids, 6-years [old], that are singing in front of the mirror. They’re also thinking about their Grammy speech."
But the question is, is West thinking about interrupting their acceptance speech too?
Do you take Kanye's feelings about award winners seriously or is this just another rant? Chime in below!

'Paranormal Activity 2' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Clutch these fun facts to your chest and hope the nightmares subside!By Eric Ditzian

"Paranormal Activity 2"

Photo: Paramount Pictures

"Paranormal Activity 2" is the story of what happens when a horror movie that cost about as much as a brand-new Ford Fiesta makes almost $200 million at the worldwide box office.
How are you not going to make a sequel to a movie that has become the most profitable flick in Hollywood history? Giving "PA 2" a green-light was a no-brainer for Paramount. What was considerably trickier was making a movie that would please all the fans who embraced the original film last year. Crazy thing is, the studio seems to have pulled it off, as early reviews have been extremely positive. The sequel, in short, is scary as hell.
So think of MTV News' "Paranormal Activity" cheat sheet as a safety blanket of sorts: Clutch it to your chest and hope the nightmares subside. Alas, they probably won't for a while. Enjoy!
Activity on More 'Activity'
After a limited rollout during it's first three weekends, "PA" went wide and popped off grosses of $19.6 million, $21.1 million and $16.4 million over the following three weekends. By that point, sequel talk was already out in the open. Paramount was pressing forward and confident in its ability to come up with the right creative approach.
Writer/director Oren Peli would not be reprising his duties, so who would? Early word was that the director gig would go to Kevin Greutert ("Saw VI"), but that never came to pass. Then there was a wacky rumor that Brian De Palma would get the job. That never happened either, and the man who ended up occupying the director's chair was Tod Williams ("The Door in the Floor").
Who's Screaming Now?
As the crew came together, the question remained: Would Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat reprise their roles? And given how "PA" ended, could they reprise their roles?
Sloat hinted he would when we caught up with him in March. "All I can tell you is I'm very excited for the project, it's really cool, it's gonna be really interesting and it's not gonna suck," he said.
Featherston, by contrast, was totally in the dark. "I don't know. I'm waiting to hear," the actress told us in March. "If they had a way to put me in there in a way that would be reasonable and make sense — I don't know how they'd do that — I'd definitely be down for it. If I get that phone call, I will be there. I will be scared or happy or whatever they want me to be."
Did they eventually make the cut? Who else did? That's entering spoiler territory, so we'll leave it there and just say, "See the freaking movie!"
Time to Freak Out
In June, the trailer arrived. It, too, avoided spoilers — and got us very pumped about the sequel. A second, more revealing trailer popped up in September. A slew of viral videos and a clip soon followed.
Finally, it came time for fans to see the movie. Paramount staged 19 midnight screenings across the country, and we were there in New York and Los Angeles to take in the terror.
"I'm scared," one L.A. fan told us after the movie. "We're not going to sleep. Drink coffee, stay up tonight, watch some cartoons, but we're not going to sleep."
Check out everything we've got on "Paranormal Activity 2."

Britney Spears' 'Me Against The Music': 'Glee' Vs. The Original

Watch Brittany and Santana's version side-by-side with Britney and Madonna's.By Jocelyn Vena

Heather Morris and Britney Spears on the set of "Glee"

Photo: Facebook

Heather Morris, who plays hilariously ditzy cheerleader Brittany on "Glee," got to channel her sort-of namesake on Tuesday night's "Britney/Brittany" episode. And the professional-dancer-turned-actress didn't disappoint as she re-enacted Spears' videos for "Toxic," "Slave 4 U" and "Me Against the Music." She tackled all of them with her spectacular dance skills and a pretty killer singing voice.

The anesthesia-induced dream sequences followed one of Brittany's stellar reveals: "My name is also Britney Spears. Brittany S. Pierce. I've lived my entire life in Britney Spears' shadow." Well, on Tuesday night she stepped out of her shadow.
Of all the video reinterpretations in the episode, the Madonna/Britney team-up, which saw Santana playing Madge and Brittany playing you guessed it, paid homage to the original 2003 video, directed by Paul Hunter. Aside from a few artistic tweaks in the "Glee" version's choreography, Morris and company do the original justice.
"The 'Me Against the Music' montage, it's literally copied exactly from the video, the shots and looks, but the choreography is made so much more for a dancer — none of it is from the video," Morris told New York magazine about the "Glee" version. "You just have to wait to see it. It's insane."
Hunter spoke to MTV News last year about his original concept for Britney's "Music" video. "I try to play opposites, when you have Britney in dark and Madonna in white," he said. "And then we see them kind of dance around the bed .. and you think they're gonna get on top of each other and do something crazy."

Fat Calves

I have fat claves.
I have fat calves.
I have fat calves and I have a problem buying tall boots in the Fall/Winter because of them.
Even when I'm skinny, I have fat calves. I've always had them. I remember being a size four and not being able to find boots that fit. I just have fat calves.
I told this to Mark tonight and said, "I can't even blog about it because it's embarrassing," and he said, "Own it!"
So I am. I have fat calves.
What's prompting this is that I got a pair of Hunter boots today. I thought if anything is going to fit, surely it will be these gigantic rain boots. But low and behold, I tried one on and it got stuck on my leg. I seriously thought I was going to have to cut it off. (The boot. Or the leg.) And you know, the boots are rubber, so the harder I pulled, the hotter my leg became and the tighter the boot got. When I finally pulled it off it was like "Pop!"—it was like a suction.

I'm so bummed out.
I have fat calves.
I have fat calves.
I have fat calves and I hate them.

JWoww Teases 'Jersey Shore' Season-Two Finale Melee

'It was multiple levels,' she tells MTV News about argument that pits the 'Shore'-mates against one another on tonight's episode.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello

It wouldn't be a "Jersey Shore" episode unless there was a good fight. And the show's season finale, airing Thursday night (October 21), has a good one. And like many of the brawls that have shaken up the Shore, it all stems from alcohol and misunderstandings.

When the woman at the center of the feud, JWoww, stopped by MTV News on Thursday, just hours before the premiere, she talked about what led up to the incident.
"It was multiple levels. It was, like, stress. It was the last day; everyone's tired and partying," JWoww said. "We probably had a couple drinks in us at that time."
Without giving away too much, all of the castmates start arguing after they play a game in which they're forced to answer questions about each other. Madness ensues from there.
"You know, it really came down to me and Pauly's emotions towards each other, 'cause we care so much about each other," JWoww explained. "So I was, like, extremely insulted thinking that Pauly called me fake, 'cause I love, I absolutely love that kid with all my heart. And he was extremely insulted that I thought he did because he loves me the same.
"So it was like we butt heads and I took it the wrong way," she continued. "And he took it the wrong way. Mike took it the wrong way ... Nicole did," she added of the Situation and Snooki getting roped in to the conflict.
Earlier on Thursday, JWoww and her "Jersey Shore" pals visited CBS' "The Early Show," where Pauly D proudly proclaimed he had no regrets about how the second season wraps up.
"I'm glad the way I came off on the show," he shared. "They made me look exactly the way I was ... They make you look exactly the way you are, there's no script. So I don't really have any regrets." He added, "That's the best part about it — we're just doing what we're normally doing anyways."
Don't miss the "Jersey Shore" season finale tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!
